This is a California Brown Pelican. He is eating some scraps that a local fisherman tossed. his way. The brown pelican, pelecanus occidentalis, is a bird of the pelican family, pelecanidae, one of three species found in the Americas and one of two that feed by diving into water.

Beautiful photograph. If you're out photographing these wonderful birds, gently request that the fisherman don't throw scraps. These birds eat their fish whole. We've had several birds come into the hospital in with damaged pouches that were punctured by fish bones.
